Sorry we haven’t written in so long but even C and R need a vacation, even if it is one with gambling (they gave us free chips AND free drinks) and lots of golf, (In a hail storm, no less, now that is dedication), but we are back just in time for the heat.
Well, while we were away, Necka was overseas helping Team USA. First Kayla Perderson and Jeanette Pohlen, now Necka. Stanford Sophomore Necka Ogwumike led her U19 National Team to the World Championships in Thailand last week, joining Kayla and Jeannette with international experience. Now all three Stanford players have Gold Medals for their respective teams and very interesting stories to respond to when asked in class, “What did you do this summer?”
Necka scored 22 points in the 87-71 Gold Medal game over Spain. Interestingly, Spain beat Team USA in the first game and Team USA had to play catch up the rest of the tournament. They responded to the pressure to not lose a game and to get to the title game and exact their revenge over Team Spain.
Team USA Co-Captain Necka was the only US player selected to the All-Tournament Team, having four double-doubles in the nine game tournament.
USA Coach Carol Owens said she was harder on Necka then anyone because she could take it, and I guess that what playing for Tara VanDerveer does for you; toughens you up real-quick-like.
Other Stanford players are not frittering away their summer, either, as some of our girls are playing in the San Francisco Pro-Am League, most notably two of our incoming freshmen, Mikaela Ruef and Joslyn Tinkle. I think Lindy is on one of the teams, too. Good way to get valuable experience, although the whole Cal squad is there, too. Geez, how many incoming freshmen doe s Cal have, about 40? Let’s just hope no one gets hurt.
